Originally a chorus girl, she took up law and in 1951 she married Walter Gumbel (1903–81), a naturalised German-born Jew and barrister. Member of the London County Council 1955-8 Wandsworth Clapham. Returned to local politics in 1967 when she was elected to the Greater London Council as one of the representatives of Lambeth. There was a large swing from the Conservatives, and when the next election was held in 1970 the seat returned to the Labour Party. She regained her place on the GLC in December 1971 when she was elected at a by-election to fill a casual vacancy in the representation of Kensington and Chelsea. At the next council elections in May 1973 the number of seats for Kensington and Chelsea was reduced from 2 to 3, and she stood aside. She returned to the GLC at the next elections in 1977, representing Sutton and Cheam until the council's abolition in 1986. She was a member of Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council from 1968-1987, serving as Mayor in 1971-72. Details of her son, Nicky Gumbel, an Evangelical Christian developer of the "Alpha Course" [1].
