The incumbent government, led by Jadranko Fyodorov of the nationalist Independence Party of Sitka, sought a second term in office against the socialist Democratic–Farmer–Labour Party of Sitka led by Berend Nessler and the liberal Liberal Democratic Party led by Vaclav Sirota. A total of seventeen parties took part in the election, with ten being successful in winning at least one seat in the Assembly.
