| - However, if the party is set up with element-absorbing equipment, the Scholar can provide healing along with damage to foes. A potent strategy involves two Scholars with Absorb MP and a half-damage resistance to one of the Scholars' tomes (so Absorb MP will activate, but to minimize damage). When one Scholar casts a spell, the other will gain the MP used, allowing healing and damage on every turn. A Seer with Illusion, Turbo MP, and Recharge can be used as a substitute due to their naturally high resistance, meaning they take minimal damage from spells such as "Rime Bolt Tome" with the White Robe equipped.

A Seer with Illusion, Turbo MP, and Recharge can be used as a substitute due to their naturally high resistance, meaning they take minimal damage from spells such as "Rime Bolt Tome" with the White Robe equipped. Their Study skill allows for easier loot theft, and their Natural Selection attack can be useful depending on how many of a race is on either side; if against Clans like the Bangaa Brotherhood and Nu Mou Nobles, Natural Selection can be a very effective weapon. However, using it on nu mou damages the caster. In contrast to most other incarnations of the Scholar, Scholars are akin to Sages. They are able to move four tiles (without external aid) granting them better mobility, and have decent physical stats—though their attack is somewhat handicapped due to the books they wield being weak melee weapons, as well as the lack of physical skills available. A unique trait that is exclusive only to the Scholar is the option of dealing dark magical damage to all units on the map. Scholars that stand out in the game are Narph, Mauri in the seal quests, and Mack Ocktor at some points in the game.
