In the 2250s, the Chech'Iw was under the command of General Gorkon, with Mazhtog as his first officer. During Gorkon's command, the Chech'Iw clashed sixteen times with Federation forces, five of those with the Starfleet starship, USS Dauntless under the command of Captain Diego Reyes. In an engagement with the Dauntless at Xarant in late 2258 or early-2259, the Chech'Iw severely damaged the Pyotr Velikiy-class ship, killing 18 of its crew, including the first officer, Commander Rajiv Mehta.

Five months later, in 2259, the Chech'Iw once again met the Dauntless, this time at Arkenite mining asteroid, Azha-R7a. This encounter did not end in hostilities, however. Instead, the Dauntless's chief medical officer, Ezekiel Fisher, saved Gorkon's son Kintazh's life from theragen poisoning. (VAN novella: The Ruins of Noble Men) Gorkon would later serve as the Chancellor of the High Council of the Klingon Empire from 2292 to 2293.
