Thurstan (died 1072) was the last Saxon Abbot of Ely. He was reputed to be a man of great learning, and hailed originally from the Isle of Ely itself. He was appointed by King Harold Godwinson, but managed to survive the Norman conquest in his position by wisely maintaining a low profile. In 1070 the rebellion of Hereward the Wake used Ely as a holdout, and after this the eye of William was on him, and the abbey was fined a consierable sum. Yet Thurstan was not displaced, and the King visitied the Isle and the shrine of Saint Etheldreda there. When Thurstan died in 1072, William appointed a Norman Abbot, Theodwin.
