Mechs gain wires when leveling up (along with Circuits; they are used when building a Mech. Their purpose is to 'revive' the power potency of an upgrade type (such as "All Skills" or "Single skill: Targeting" etc), as using a circuit on a certain type decreases the power of the next circuit in that area by 10%. Wires will increase the power of that area back up again.

He attaches them to the rear ends of special knives to make an invisible maze of cutting wires around the area where the knives were thrown. Another use would be to attach a wire to the enemy to allow the user to throw the knives and always expect them to hit the enemy, due to the wire guiding the knife or knives thrown.

However, Chief Warrant Officer Xiong Wong knew and blackmailed Wires into cracking an encrypted holodisc that Jan Ors had "borrowed" from Kyle Katarn, who was injured. Wong threatened to reveal Wires's secret to Commander Olifer if he did not help Ors. Wires managed to decrypt the disc which contained a message for Katarn from his father.
