The International Settlement was originally a British settlement built in Shanghai in the early 1840s where many British people lived and worked. It was one of the original five treaty ports which were established under the terms of the Treaty of Nanking at the end of the first opium war in the year 1842. Throughout the years other countries such as the United States of America and France arrived making their own quarters in the settlement.
