The hulk was returned to the Norfolk Navy Yard and surveyed in October 1948 for possibility of completion, but was pronounced "unfit for naval service". Newark was then sold to American Shipbreakers, Inc. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 2 April 1949 for scrapping.
