Physicians classify dysesthesia by where on the body it is felt and what sensation it provokes. It can be caused by numerous conditions such as diabetes mellitus, alcohol withdrawal, multiple sclerosis and even chemotherapy. Dysesthesia is still poorly understood and it is not certain whether it is a real physiological disorder or merely a psychosomatic one. Both physiotherapy and antidepressants have proven to be effective.
