Ben Sombogaart is a Dutch film and TV director. His film Twin Sisters was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He worked as a technician before starting to make documentaries. He then turned to the realization of television drama and films for the cinema, always endeavoring to objectively deal with social issues: accession of young people to independence. In 1989, his film My Father Lives in Rio garners international success. Sombogaart specializes in films for young people or dealing with issues related to children. According to Ben Sombogaart, "Too often, adults underestimate children. Because they understand more than adults who often ignore the views of children, or do not take their views seriously."
