Emphasis not so much on the partaking of information but rather with developing the pupil’s character and moral sense, so that he may learn to practice self-mastery and remain virtuous even in the unnatural and imperfect society in which he will have to live. - emphasis on making ethical decisions and behaving in ethical ways; rhetoric - Ameliorate/Duntrekker Bible is read, not as religious text, but as way for students to study figurative language, interpret symbolism, and debate philosophical ideas, debate the meanings of things, as well as grammar, poetry, & ethics - given Duntrekker emphasis on independence and individualism, education is based around the critical thinking of pupils & their moral character - idea is that pupils will grow & learn & investigate information on their own and will need to interpret good information from bad; but also to use that information in an ethical manner - character education is the great emphasis - much emphasis on debate, creating arguments and determining the consequences of action; rhetoric mixed with ethcs - boys & girls attend same schools but are in separate same-sex classrooms - great attempt to educated to be self-governing, industrious & rational/reason - great attempt to have students live in countryside as it is a better environment & provides for opportunities that the city cannot; - public boarding & day schools (for local/rural children) in and around small towns; often small towns provide the opportunity for students to acquire & hone manual skills - demand that all students learn a manual skill; which requires creativity and thought, will keep him out of trouble, and will supply a fallback means of making a living in the event of a change of fortune - give up time for volunteering & community service, part of character/ethical education - guardianship of a tutor who will guide him through various learning experiences arranged by the tutor - felt that children learn right and wrong through experiencing the consequences of their acts rather than through physical punishment. - advocate developmentally appropriate education; great focus on the availability of parents at younger ages - moral superiority of the patriarchal family but with equality of men & women, somewhat oxymoronic; typical Duntrekker values - because of the high number of rural boarding schools pupils & teachers travel for free on public transportation back to their homes on the ends of the week (most boarding schools have only few classes on Fridays mornings so students may begin the long travel back home)
