Juma(JM004) was first seen in September 1993 in a group called Jaskson Five as a young male, approximately six months old. He was easily reconized by a dark smear underneath his right eye. The group was very small and struggled to survive. The dominant female of the group was predated, followed by the dominant male and a subordinate female. Eventually only Juma and his three younger sisters remained. As the females were too young to lead, Juma became the leader. The group was very small and struggled to survive. The dominant female of the group was predated, followed by the dominant male and a subordinate female. Eventually only Juma and his three younger sisters remained. As the females were too young to lead, Juma became the leader. But after the rains arrived an unrelated male joined the group and Juma took to roving. Two months later he was found in a new group that consisted of two adult females and a subadult male. Juma became the dominant male of the group and started fathering pups with one of the females. Over time they reproduced successfully and raised the group's numbers to around twenty members. Juma had fathered six litters with his partner. Sadly, the dominant female was then lost, believed to have been predated. The remaining females in Juma's group were all his daughters and so he could not mate with them. Juma tried to lead his family south, towards a group of unrelated females. But his daughters tried to make the group go north, towards unrelated males. The conflicted intentions resulted in the group's constant movement from north to south and vice versa. Juma's group started to dwindle in numbers due to the indecisiveness and an ongoing drought. Sadly, in 1998 the researchers were forced to leave the study are due to the Gemsbok Park regulations. The project was moved to the Kuruman Reserve. However, in 2001 the researchers revisited the Gemsbok Park to try and relocate the original meerkats. The Jackson Five mob had died out, but at one of their previous burrows the researchers discovered a group of five meerkats. While four of the meerkats disappeared at the sight of the researchers, one large male remained. He was quickly identified as Juma. He and one other male were the only meerkats that remained from when the researchers had first started their study at the park. Juma was eight years old and was the dominant male of the new group. Juma's family were one of the largest in the area, showing evidence of his success.
