- The Lawgiver is a central orangutan prophet deity in the Planet of the Apes franchise. He was mentioned and quoted in the first two Apes movies of the series, but only appeared in the final Apes film, 1973's Battle for the Planet of the Apes, played by actor-director John Huston.
- Each Lawgiver has a sensor on its grip that is programmed to recognize the palm-print of the authorized user registered to the weapon. If anyone else, including another Judge, attempts to use the weapon it will self-destruct in the user's hand, leaving them severely crippled or killed. However, recognising that this feature may interfere with a Judge performing their duties in the field, the Justice Department does maintain instructions on how to bypass the security feature. This information is only accessible by Senior Judges and above, and was demonstrated by Judge Dredd when one of his partners was killed during an investigation.
- The Lawgiver is the herald of Abadar, a massive living construct of gold and steel. Restricting any communication to quotes from the holy texts of its master, much about this being and its existence remain unknown.
- The Lawgiver was the weapon of the Mega-City One Judges and other Judge forces, including those in Calhab. It was used in Mega-City One as early as 2080. It was equipped with the following types of ammunition:
* General Purpose
* high explosive
* heatseeker / hot shot - introduced shortly before Christmas 2098
* dodgems / ricochet The Lawgiver was programmed to accept only its owner's palm-print. If an unauthorised person tried to use it, an explosive charge would detonate, either killing or maiming the person.
- Spock, on examining the staff taken from a lawgiver by James Kirk, noted that it appeared to be a hollow tube – a weapon with no mechanism. He theorized that the staffs were antennae that received some sort of broadcast power. Lawgivers, as representatives of Landru, were viewed with quasi-mystical reverence by most citizens of Beta III. Many thought they were everywhere, all seeing and all knowing, but this was clearly not the case: they were unaware of specific members of the underground, or of the landing party, until Hacom contacted them.
- It was caught in the middle of a fight when the Covenant Fleet went into chaos and the Brute controlled ships started attacking the Elite controlled ships at the start of the Great Schism. The Lawgiver was held by Elites and when they saw that the Elite controlled cruiser Incorruptible was under attack from the Brute controlled frigate Twilight Compunction, they subsequently attacked the Brute ship.
