His Excellency Dr. The Right Honourable Sheikh Field Marshal and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Alhaji Sir Muhammad Abubakar Amadu Saidu Usman (born 14 July 1945) is the President and First Secretary-General of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the National Assembly of the People's Democratic Republic of Katsina. | - His Excellency Dr. The Right Honourable Sheikh Field Marshal and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Alhaji Sir Muhammad Abubakar Amadu Saidu Usman (born 14 July 1945) is the President and First Secretary-General of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the National Assembly of the People's Democratic Republic of Katsina. His Excellency the Founder of the Nation and Father of Independence is also the President and Chairman of the Socialist Workers Party of Katsina. Dr. Saidu Usman studied medicine in Great Britain and worked in Nigeria in the 1960s. In 1970 he entered the military and through promotions was able to achieve command of units in Katsina. He led the war of independence starting 1977 and was able to drive out the last Nigerian army units in 1981 to achieve total control of the nation. Under President Muhammadu he headed the military until the president died in 1980, assuming control of the nation. He was elected by the National Assembly to a second term in 1986, and a third in 1991. Due to critique by Western nations over the legitimacy of his election, he agreed to hold free and fair elections, where he was elected with 87.2% of the vote in 1996 over the candidates of the other parties. Impartial observers from Belarus and Abkhazia agreed the elections were fair. The constitution was amended to extend term limits to seven years, and allowed the president to be elected for multiple subsequent terms, approved in a referendum in 1999 with 93.5% of the vote. In 2003 he was again elected president with 91% of the vote, widely considered to be genuinely free and fair. In 2009 due to popular proclamation, a unanimous vote in the National Assembly and 96.8% support from the population, he was named President for Life. In 2010 his father died and he became Sheikh of Kaita, and the following year other local leaders banded together to name him King of the Known World and Emperor of Everything Beyond the Seas.
