- Alex Chilton (december 28, 1950 - March 17, 2010) was an American singer and guitarist who was known of the bands The Box Tops and Big Star. Chilton had with The Box Tops, of which a number of The letter hitsuccessen (1967) was the largest. After the break-up of The Box Tops, Chilton played solo in 1970 to some time in 1971 with Chris Bell to form the power-pop band Big Star, a group that would bring three albums which had no commercial success but affect alternative bands such asr.e.m.. Written by Chilton and Bell the number from 1998 was In the Street , in performances of Todd Griffin and Cheap Trick, used as the theme song of the television seriesThat ' 70s Show .
