  • In NetHack, many varieties of items can stack into one inventory slot. This includes: * gems, glass and stones * potions * scrolls * comestibles, except for hatchable eggs and revivable corpses * candles, if close in age * projectiles, like arrows or darts * certain throwable weapons: * All arrows (orcish, regular, elven, silver, and ya) * Athames * Boomerangs * Crossbow bolts * All daggers (orcish, normal, elven, and silver) * Darts * All spears (orcish, normal, elven, dwarven, and silver) * Flintstones * Javelins * Knives (but not the crysknife) * Scalpel * Shuriken * Stiletto
  • Stackables may be traded like any other item, however to trade only a single item instead of the entire group, the group must be split apart. To do this, simply click on the icon representing the group, and select "split item group" from the menu. Image:Item-stackable-2.png A dialogue box will pop up asking how many items should be split off. If a user attempts to enter a number equal to or greater than the current size of the group into the dialogue box, it will automatically change to be one less than the size of the group. Image:Item-stackable-3.png Clicking "ok" will create a new group for the same item with the chosen number of items in it. Any number of groups may be created like this, save that a group with a single item cannot be split. To re-merge the groups, simply select "combine into group" and all groups of that particular item will be merged into one group. Image:Item-stackable-4.png

Additionally, even a subtle difference in identification status can affect whether or not something stacks. For example, if you have two daggers, and only drop one on an altar and see it was uncursed, those two daggers will no longer stack. Then, if you were to go a step further, and use a scroll of identify on the dagger you didn't drop, and it was an uncursed +0 dagger, then it would no longer stack with your plain "uncursed dagger". Perhaps the crysknife does not stack despite its throwable status because makesingular() would trip up over "3 worm teeth named cookies", causing all sorts of problems with wishing, autopickup exceptions, and general object comparison.
