Lorimer started his National Hockey League career with the New York Islanders in 1976. He also played for the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Rockies. He retired after the 1986 season. In 1981 Lorimer was traded along with Dave Cameron to the Colorado Rockies for their first round choice in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft - who turned out to be Pat LaFontaine. Lorimer struggled with the weak Rockies and their successor New Jersey Devils and retired in 1986 after five seasons with them.
