Don Joseph Nasi (1524–1579) was a Spanish-born Jewish diplomat and administrator, member of the House of Mendes, and influential figure in the Ottoman Empire during the rules of both Sultan Suleiman I and his son Selim II. "Nasi", meaning "prince" in the Hebrew language, was likely (given his station) a cognomen at the start which developed into a family name in succeeding generations.
