  • In the Mirror Universe, Gul Elim Garak was the second-in-command of Terok Nor in the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance. He served under the command of Intendant Kira Nerys. He chafed under Kira’s command, constantly wishing to set brutal and violent examples at the slightest infraction made by the Terran slaves on the station. Most of his time was spent hatching plans for the killing of the Intendant and taking over Terok Nor, unfortunately for him most of the plans were rather transparent and ended up failing. In 2370, the arrival of the Kira Nerys from the regular universe gave him a great opportunity. His plan was to kill the Intendant and have the regular Kira replace her, and then Kira would resign from the post and leave Garak in command. This particular plot failed because Kira left before he could have the Intendant “disappear”. The next year, Garak wished to make an example of the leader of the Terran Rebellion, Benjamin Sisko. His hopes came crashing down when the Intendant was so happy to have her plaything back, that she told Garak to leave him alone. When Rom came forward with information on Sisko, Garak had him tortured into revealing the plan to have Jennifer Sisko removed from the station, he then had Rom executed. In 2372, when Terok Nor was captured by rebels he was the only officer to escape from it. He was quickly captured and put in a dog collar for his disgrace, by Regent Worf. However he did manage to deflect blame for the loss at the Battle of Terok Nor onto the Intendant. In 2375, the Regent finally caught uo with the Intendant, but managed to bargain her way put of punishment by suggesting the Regent use Zek to trade for a cloaking device (the Alliance didn’t have cloaking technology). Garak was disappointed that he wouldn’t get to execute the Intendant, but he did plan to execute Zek, Rom, and Quark instead. However, the Ferengi managed to disrupt Garak’s attention by saying that our Garak would have relished the chance to interrogate his prisoners and learn their secrets. The mirror Garak was more interested in just killing his prisoners, but the delay had stopped him just long enough for Ezri Tigan to sneak up and take the hypospray Garak was about to use on Quark. The hypospray had contained a ulcartic virus which would cause immense pain. Garak was left for dead. He like his counterpart was played by Andrew Robinson.

Garak was constantly hatching plots to kill the Intendant and take command of the station himself—plots that were always transparent and unsuccessful. (DS9 episode: "Crossover") He was the illegitimate son of Enabran Tain, though his father never told him that this was the case. (ST - Mirror Universe novel: Rise Like Lions) Garak was assigned to Terok Nor in 2367 by his father. Prior to the assignment, Garak had planted false evidence against Dukat's father that led to the elder Dukat's execution. In 2369, Garak reported Annika Hansen's activities to Tain and provided her with occasional help. Garak later tortured Leeta. (ST novel: Dark Passions) When the Kira Nerys of the primary universe suddenly arrived on the station in 2370, Garak saw the opportunity to have the Intendant killed, and have her replaced by the new Kira. Kira would then resign her post, leaving Garak in charge of the station. However, Garak's plot never came to fruition, because Kira left the station before he could have the Intendant "disappear". (DS9 episode: "Crossover") The next year, Garak relished the chance to make an "example" of Terran Rebellion leader Benjamin Sisko, but the Intendant was so pleased to have her former lover back at her side that she told Garak to leave him alone. When Rom came to the station offering intelligence on Sisko, Garak had him tortured into revealing the plot to help Jennifer Sisko escape from the station, and then had him killed. (DS9 episode: "Through the Looking Glass") When the rebels attacked and captured Terok Nor from the Alliance in 2372, Garak was the only officer to escape the destruction unharmed. However, he was quickly captured by Regent Worf, who placed him in a dog collar as humiliation for the defeat. However, Garak managed to deftly deflect blame for the loss of the station onto Intendant Kira, and further convinced the Regent that she was to blame for the defeat at the Battle of Terok Nor. (DS9 episode: "Shattered Mirror") Worf and Garak finally managed to capture the Intendant in 2375, but she managed to bargain for her life by convincing the Regent to use Zek as a bargaining chip to obtain a cloaking device from our universe -- a technology that the Alliance did not possess. Garak was greatly disappointed that he was not able to execute the Intendant, but he planned to use it to execute Zek, Quark, and Rom instead. However, the Ferengi managed to deflect Garak's attention by pointing out that his plans were amateurish -- the primary universe Elim Garak would have relished the chance to actually interrogate his subjects to learn their secrets. The mirror Garak, however, was more interested in simply killing his prisoners. Garak was distracted long enough for Ezri to sneak up on him and inject him with the same hypospray that he was about to use on Quark. Garak was left for dead -- the contents of the hypospray he had been injected with was concentrated ulcartic virus, a very deadly and painful disease. (DS9 episode: "The Emperor's New Cloak")
