The Kingdom of Semien, which is at times referred to as Beta Israel, was a Jewish state located in modern day Ethiopia. Jewish Ethiopian tradition places the establishment of Semien in the 4th Century in response to the Kingdom of Axum's conversion to Christianity under Empress Ezana. The Semien state would last till 1627 when Ethiopia, under Emperor Susenyos I, conquered the Jewish state.
