Pittsburgh City Council moved to eliminate the city’s General Services Department in November, 2006. Merging the defunct department’s purchasing office with Allegheny County’s is expected. Councilman William Peduto said the city has wasted millions of dollars in potential savings this year by not merging the departments in December 2005, when City Council failed to approve a plan to merge the two offices. Some estimates put the potential savings as high as $5 million a year, but few officials agree on the number. Peduto said he wants to see a merger by Jan. 1, 2007.
