But he was too late, forcing the heartbroken couple to put Kal-El into a spaceship and send it hurtling away just as Krypton exploded.
Landing on Earth, little Kal-El was found by a farming couple named Jonathan and Martha Kent. They raised him as Clark Joseph Kent, their adopted son. Growing up in Smallville, Kansas, Clark eventually discovered that the yellow sun of the Earth granted him extraordinary superpowers. He began using these powers to make anonymous saves around his hometown and developed an interest in journalism.
At the age of eighteen, Clark was assigned to show a new student around. His name was Lex Luthor, whom Clark became best friends with. After Lex left to return to Metropolis, Clark discovered a holographic message from his birth parents located in his ship. With knowledge of his past, Clark set off across the world to discover its many highs and lows.
Along the way, Clark continued to pusue his journalism career and submitted stories to the Inquisitor and the Daily Planet. While covering a story of warring tribes in Honduras, Clark met a young girl named Kya, who was revealed to have superpowers of her own. Kya saw Clark's future, warning him that Lex was not to be trusted. Clark was too late to protect Kya. however, and she was killed by the rival tribe. Heartbroken, Clark returned to Smallville, determined to stop what happened in Honduras and beyond. He decided he wanted to use his powers for good to protect the people of Earth.
His Honduras story caught the eye of Daily Planet editor Perry White, who offered Clark a job. With his destiny set before him and his new costume, Clark moved to Metropolis to begin his career. It was here that Clark met Lois Lane, saving her from a runaway helicopter. His first day on the job also led to his meeting Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant and also reuniting with Lex.
When Lex invited his friend to his charity benefit later that night, Clark took Cat Grant. The two of them seemed to be hitting it off until a gang of terrorists crashed the party, threatening the civilians with bodily harm until they turned over their belongings. Clark changed into his costume, defeating the thugs and saving the day.
As the media flocked to Clark's superhero persona, he soon found himself in a confrontation with Rudy Jones, who had been turned into the monstrous Parasite after a STAR Labs accident. Clark managed to defeat the beast, but soon found himself being propositioned for an interview by Lois. After being interviewed on the roof of the Daily Planet, Clark was finally given his iconic name of Superman, coined by Lois.
