Sawyer décide de l'achever pour abréger ses souffrances mais il rate le cœur et lui perfore le poumon, ce qui contraint Jack à l'euthanasier.

- Edward Mars was a United States Marshal who sought to apprehend the fugitive Kate Austen. Their years-long game of cat-and-mouse came to an end when Mars arrested Kate in Australia. He was escorting her on Oceanic Flight 815 to Los Angeles when the plane crashed on the Island. Mars survived three days in excruciating pain, until Sawyer attempted to end his suffering by shooting him in the heart. Sawyer missed the heart and only perforated Mars' lung. Jack then euthanized Mars.

- Edward Mars era lo sceriffo federale degli Stati Uniti che ha dato per tre anni la caccia a Kate Austen,ricercata per frode,incendio doloso,aggressione a un agente federale,aggressione a mano armata,furto di oggetti di ingente valore,furto di automobile e omicidio di primo grado. L’inseguimento di Mars nei confronti della fuggitiva è terminato con l’arresto della Austen in Australia,dopo esser stata denunciata da Ray Mullen. L’agente federale la stava scortando sul volo Oceanic 815 per estradarla negli Stati Uniti e farla processare quando il velivolo è precipitato sull’Isola. Mars sopravvisse allo schianto,ma morì qualche giorno dopo a cause delle gravi ferite subìte.
- Before coming to the Island, Edward Mars tried to start a chocolate bar company called "Mars Bars". However, after being sued by Mars Inc., he gave up the dream and became a US Marshall instead. In flashbacks, it was revealed that Mars had the hots for Kate, whom he was chasing after she killed her dad and ran from the law. Like many men, he often fantasized about Kate in handcuffs. Unlike many men, his fantasy involved him capturing Kate, handcuffing her and taking her on a airplane ride, which would ultimatley crash and leave Mars and handcuffed Kate all alone on an uninhabited Island where he could have his way with her. Even worse was that Mars took his weird fantasy a little too far and attempted to make it a reality, thus breaking the fantasy/creepo barrier.
