United States Navy Rear admiral Sherman E. Burroughs (February 22, 1903—September 23, 1992) was the first commander assigned to Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake (originally known as the Naval Ordnance Test Station). He served as commander from December 20, 1943, to August 18, 1945. Burroughs was the recipient of two Silver Stars and one Distinguished Flying Cross. Sherman E. Burroughs High School was named to honor Admiral Burroughs.
