An absolute was a work of gramarye (magic) with only two outcomes, success or death. Eragon learned not to use absolutes while training with Oromis. A substitute for absolutes was to phrase the spell as a process, which you could stop any time. Absolutes were shorter than non-absolutes. Eragon used non-absolutes on Murtagh during The Battle of The Burning Plains.
