Caleb, the son of Jephunneh of the tribe of Judah, was one of the twelve people from the children of Israel spoken of in the Bible who was sent by Moses to spy out the Promised Land in Numbers chapter 13. (Joshua, the son of Nun of the tribe of Ephraim, was another.) After 40 days of observation, Caleb along with the eleven other spies brought back a report that the Promised Land was indeed "a land flowing with milk and honey". However, ten of the spies also brought back a bad report that the land "devours its inhabitants", that its cities were walled, and that the "sons of Anak", a remnant of "the giants", were also present. This discouraged the children of Israel to the point where they thought of returning to Egypt for fear of their children falling prey to the land's inhabitants. Caleb
