Derek Patrick Farrell was an executive at Microsoft Corporation, and the ex-husband of CTU analyst Jamey Farrell. Farrell was Jamey's superior when she joined Microsoft after graduating college, and the two quickly began a relationship. Derek and Jamey were married once Jamey became pregnant with the couple's son, Kyle. Worried about Kyle, Jamey asked if they could move to Los Angeles so her mother could help raise him, but Derek refused. Eventually, Derek started an affair with a "redhead" executive who had returned to the Seattle office after working abroad for two years, and left Jamey, saying he was too young to be a father.
