He was born on 15 September 1904 in Racconigi, Piedmont, Italy, son of King Victor Emanuel III of Italy and his wife, Princess Helen of Montenegro. He became King of Italy upon the death of his father on 28 December 1947, and reigned for the rest of his life. He died on 18 March 1983 in Naples, Italy.
