In 1927, The king of Spain was deposed, and a republic was established. New Spain keep her status as a Viceroyalty of the Kingdom of Spain, not recognizing the republican government in Spain proper. The Spanish Republic, OTOH, considered New Spain, and other overseas territories, as rebel provinces. In 1946, after a diplomatic agreement, New Spain was declared independent and the current viceroy, Leonardo Pérez, was crowned as King, under the blessing of the Borbon family.
