The King of Iraq is the head of state of the Kingdom of Iraq, which was formed in 2004 after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The monarchy was originally founded in 1921, but it was overthrown by military officer in 1958. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, an election was held, in which the descendent of the Hashemite monarchy, Prince (now King) Sharif Ali bin al-Hussein, won and restored the monarchy with promises of reunifying and rebuilding Iraq. He has been incumbent since May 2004. The King was addressed as His Majesty (صاحب الجلالة).
