The Tachyon Star Drive motors on board the Odyssey and other Galaxy Class cruisers allowed faster-than-light travel. If activated within two light-years of a star, the ship would plunge unctrolled into the heart of the star, dragging any matter in its wake with it. Red globes of Tachyon space would form around such matter, escape from these globes would be impossible as they were technically in another universe.
