A mass detector was an instrument that attempted to measure the mass of a cargo. Its purpose was to prevent smuggling of goods by ensuring that a cargo had no more in it than was claimed in the manifest. A counter-technology developed by Beta Colony was a mass detector jammer, which successfully concealed masses from detectors.
