A Caliphate is a theocratic system of government in which the ruler of a nation, the Caliph, is a successor to the political authority of the Prophet Muhammad. As the only system of government with full approval in Islamic theology, there are varying views on what makes a Caliph's rule legitemate and how a Caliph is selected.
