Cassandra Cain became the first Batgirl to star in a regular series after her successful appearances alongside Batman in 1999's "No Man's land" saga. The new series was plotted by Scott Peterson and Kelly Puckett, with the latter handling the script, and featured art by Damian Scott. Batgirl followed Cassandra's attempt to become a full fledged crime fighter as Batman and Oracle (the original Batgirl) watched over her and provided help when needed. The opening issue dealt with Cassandra's troubled past and her brave attempt to overcome her upbringing as a would-be assassin.
