The Avatar Program is a project wherein a cloned Na'vi humanoid is created and remotely operated by a human "driver." These "avatars" are initially created in vitro on Earth, and then allowed to grow to maturity in an amnio tank during the five year trip to Pandora. Genetic material from the future human driver is incorporated into the avatar embryo, allowing the development of the anatomic structures needed to allow a mental link to be established with that particular individual. Only twenty avatars have been produced thus far.
