Cameron was raised in the suburban Los Angeles areas of Sherman Oaks and Studio City. Cameron was an only child who gravitated to music as a youngster in the early 1970s. He befriended Jim Podolor, nephew of the record producer Richard Podolor (producer of Three Dog Night and Steppenwolf) and began as a gofer at the Podolor family's local studio. After finishing school Cameron began writing songs, and plugging demo recordings for several years, eventually securing several record contracts.
