Goshi meant "a samurai from the country," a "farmer-samurai", in opposition to saigo or "city-samurai". The Sparrow Clan was considered a clan of goshi. Originally, the term Goshi referred to samurai who had to outfit themselves for war without a daimyo's assistance.
