Born in Worcestershire, he trained at Westcott House theological college, Cambridge. He moved to London, and from 1944-58 he was assistant missioner at Charterhouse Public School Mission in Bermondsey, and then warden of the Wellington College Mission in East Lane, Walworth. In 1958 he became rector of St Peter's, Walworth. He was made an honorary canon of Southwark Cathedral in 1969. He grew frustrated with the church's inability to address social issues and left the priesthood in 1972.
