Peel would often mention in his later life that if he was not able to watch certain football matches on television, he would listen to BBC Radio 5 Live to receive commentary. As a football fan, Peel took part in some of the original Radio 5 shows, including Chain Reaction, where he and Ian Rush interviewed each other. He also took part in comedy sports quizzes and live football phone-in shows for the station.
