Grace Chang Driver was the wife of Achilles Driver. She was the first-generation American child of Chinese immigrants Joey and Mrs. Chang. Her parents forbade her to marry a black man and she defied their wishes. A daughter defying her father on matters of marriage is a huge breach of traditional Confucian morality, and Grace's father was unable to forgive her. He had very little contact with Grace or her children from the time of her marriage on, although he and his wife softened as the years passed. Grace had two children, Karen and a younger child.
