At the drill site, John and Don fall into quicksand, but Dr. Smith flees in terror rather than attempt to rescue them. Arriving back at camp, he tells the others of the situation and Will runs to the drill site with a rope to rescue his father and Don. John is so angry that he banishes Dr. Smith from the camp. When he leaves, Smith takes a bottle of deutronium fuel to ensure the Robinsons will not be able to leave without him.
