Pat Cooley was a US Navy officer during the Second Great War. He served as executive officer of the USS Josephus Daniels in 1942-3 under Lieutenant Sam Carsten. In 1943, Carsten suggested to Captain William McClintock that Cooley be given his own command. After the Battle of the North Atlantic and the subsequent US liberation of Bermuda, Cooley was promoted to lieutenant commander (suddenly outranking Carsten) and was given command of a destroyer. He was missed by the crew of the Josephus Daniels, especially when they compared him to his successor, Lieutenant Myron Zwilling.
