Peel who at the time was known by his real name John Ravenscroft, was working for radio KOMA in Oklohoma, the sister station of WDGY-AM. According to the book, Way Beyond Compare: The Beatles' Recorded Legacy, Volume One, 1957-1965, Peel attended the conference to interview the group for KOMA and being from the same geographic area of the Beatles, was interviewed briefly by reporters. When the conference began, Peel tried to wow the group with his Merseyside connection, announcing that he learned from Paul McCartney's aunt that a school is being built near his house. Paul unimpressed, simply mumbled that he liked schools. [1] After the conference, Peel was so embarrassed that he threw his recording away before returning to the station, telling them that the tape had been 'stolen' by a jeal
