The 2009 Atlantic hurricane season was an unusually active season, featuring 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes. Much like the previous season, there was an unprecedented number of hurricane landfalls, with Mexico and the United States, especially Florida and the Carolinas, being the hardest-hit. The season also featured the first major hurricane landfall in the United States in four years, with two storms making landfall in the United States at major hurricane intensity (Ida and Kate). Cumulatively, the season's activity and landfalls made it the fourth-costliest Atlantic hurricane season on record.
