The Hymns of Contrition may also be called the Penitential Hymns (in Greek, the Katanyktikoi Hymnoi) . The term refers to a wide set of pieces of hymnography used throughout the period of the Triodion, most especially in the stichera of Lenten Vespers (most often referenced in Sunday night Vespers).
