In Grandia III, Expert Status refers to your playable characters' inner abilities to perform certain tasks in battle. There are three main aspects to a character's expert status: their Magic Level, their Skill Level and their Special Level. Each of these levels will increase over the course of the game through a hidden experience system based on what actions your characters take in battle. A higher level will grant certain bonuses to your characters. This system is therefore not unlike the Weapon and Magic Experience system from the first game. The highest each one of these levels can reach is 15, but each character has their own caps for each of these levels.
