Renga, “linked verses”, was a more modern version of poetry in Rokugan. It followed the same syllabic pattern as waka (5-7-5-7-7), but was performed by two people. The first person performed the 5-7-5 then the second finished with the 7-7. The impromptu nature of the renga also lent itself to courtly contests, known as shikimoku.
