The first way, allows the user to create a solid pillar of ice of varying sizes, this allows to user to use this technique as a defense to block incoming attacks. Or as an offense to attack their target with a heavy force that has the potential of causing serious damage. The use can also make the pillar of ice have a spiked point to give it piercing damage as well; also the user can make spikes protrude out from any parts or the pillars as well. The pillar of ice doesn't freeze anythings on contact unless influenced by the user, the solid pillars of ice are harder than iron which makes it heavy and difficult to break through.
