The 1989 Hulun Protests were a series of student-led popular demonstrations against the Manchurian Communist Party that took place in the Manchurian city of Hulun in late May/early June of 1989. Though supported by certain elements within the government and a large portion of the city populace, on June 6, the protests were crushed by the military in what is known as the Hulun Massacre. Hundreds - possibly thousands - were killed in the incident. One of the primary reasons given for the protests was the continuing corruption within the government, corruption that greatly interfered with and even blocked some of the 'Second Wave' economic reforms that had begun in 1984.
