Before his ascension to Confederate Secretary of State, Gingrich was the governor of the Confederate state of Georgia, establishing a strong state guard and increased agricultural and industrial development to ensure his state did not have to depend on subsidiaries from the Confederate government in Richmond. Gingrich was one of the founders of the Independence Party who met in Charleston, South Carolina to oppose Gary Bauer's cooperation with the Soviet Union in the Soviet Invasion of the Middle East.
